Suitland resident Osama Abdelfattah Marey has been identified as the person who was killed when a driver from Laurel sideswiped several vehicles, setting off a chain-reaction crash.
At approximately 12:10 p.m. on Thursday, troopers in College Park were called to the northbound lanes of I-95 at Powder Mill Road, where there was a reported multi-vehicle crash.
Police say that Marey stopped to assist the driver of a Toyota Yaris that was disabled in the shoulder of the roadway. While he was offering aid, Hans Jurgen Gutierrez Samoya, 24, sideswiped the vehicles, striking the tow truck driver.
Somoya's Toyota Scion iA then hit a Honda Accord being driven by a 76-year-old woman, which crashed into a tractor-trailer.
Marey was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. The driver of the Honda was taken to Suburban Hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries.
The crash led to a closure of I-95 for several hours before it was reopened at around 4:40 p.m. on Thursday afternoon. It remains under investigation.
Once that investigation is complete, the details will be referred to the state's attorney's office to determine if there will be charges filed.
